La Fábrica, Ricardo Bofill’s home and architecture office in Barcelona, has become an integral feature of Westworld, the HBO science-fiction tv serie directed by Jonathan Nolan y Lisa Joy.
The show, that has just returned to the screens on its third season, revolves around a highly advanced Western-style theme park built in the near future. Its humanoid robots escape from it to discover the real world, a real world that now mostly takes place in 2058, showing a great list of “impossibly lustrous, moody, pristine built environments”, as The Architect’s Newspaper said in a recent article. AN spoke with Howard Cummings, the show’s production designer, to learn how his team selected buildings around the world matching with its complex narrative. Cummings explained why La Fábrica was considered as a filming location. Danish architect Bjarke Ingels has being an informal consultant for the serie. It was him who connected them with RBTA in Barcelona, as he happened to be in the city during the scouting.
“Bofill’s work of the 1970s was so postmodern, and to me it [La Fábrica] was a weirdly timeless design that was the opposite of the Westworld labs which are all black and glass”, explained Cummings. “Jonah fell in love with it, and we eventually got permission to use it as a laboratory. We got to film using several of the actual living quarters, but because we only had one day to film in there, we also had to build some interiors that were designed with Bofill’s original design in mind”, concluded.
